Why Vitamin C Is Your New Skincare BFF

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate is a cult product (its rumoured that a bottle of this stuff sells every minute around the world) and quite rightly so.  It’s changed my skincare routine since I picked it up back in September and is living up to its hype.

The best selling product is designed to restore complexion’s moisture, reduce fine lines and give skin a youthful glow (yes plz) and was recently reformulated after 13 years and included a boost of the active Vitamin C ingredient from 10.5% to a whopping 12.5% and the introduction of skincare hero, Hyaluronic Acid.   Hyaluronic Acid is really having its time to shine at the moment and rightly so because of it’s its amazing ability to deliver lasting moisture to the skin.

A quick lesson in Hyaluronic Acid:  Babies are born with lots of HA in their skin, which is why it’s so soft but as we age, our skin doesn’t maintain moisture as well as it used to meaning it loses it suppleness, starts to sag and fine lines and wrinkles become more apparent.  Using products with HA as an ingredient helps our skin to retain moisture and giving it back some of that much needed suppleness.

Now that all know the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid, but what about the Vitamin C, why is it such an important skincare ingredient?

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps neutralise skin-damaging free radicals which are produced by exposure to environmental elements such as pollution and UV rays.  We come into contact with free radicals before we take the first sip of our morning coffee.

Why should we use it in our routines? Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production in the skin.  Collagen is a protein which makes up almost 80 percent of your skin and is found in the middle layer (the dermis). It works  with elastin, another protein, to strengthen the skin and help it snap back into place when stretched.  As we get older, Collagen production starts to slows down and after the age of 25 we break down more collagen than we make.  Long story short, gimme all the collagen help I can get.  Products that contain Vitamin C also help to boost skin texture and firmness and fade skin pigmentation over time.

What age group is Vitamin C best for?  You don’t need to be part of the fine line gang to introduce Vitamin C into your skincare routine. Vitamin C is great for all ages as it helps with skin clarity and smoothness as well as signs of aging.

I have sensitive skin, can I use Vitamin C?  As with all new skincare products when you have sensitive skin, try it little by little/every other day and build up the skins tolerance.

When should we be using it?  You can use as part of just your AM or PM routine, or both.   I use it both.   Apply it underneath your moisturiser in the morning like you would any other serum and underneath an oil or your moisturiser in the evening.
