During a recent visit to King Cross for Clink 78’s 10th Birthday Party, the two Sophie’s (Sophie’s Scran and One Ten Zero Seven) found ourselves on a Monday evening wander on the search for a quick bite to eat and somewhere to escape the cold of a winter evening in London. Just a small walk from Kings Cross Station, Pizza Union looked like the kinda place to put the ‘quick’ in ‘let’s grab a quick slice of pizza and a beer’.
The stripped down restaurant, with its bare brick walls, neon mood lighting and canteen style seating straddles the fast food and full blown restaurant market with single digit minutes from order to table promise. With a menu consisting of, well, pizza, a few salads (for those not down with the cheese and carbs) and a couple of doughy desserts, this place delivers on flavour without breaking the bank.
With a more laid back ordering approach than other restaurants, meaning that you actually have to walk to the till, simply choose from one of 16 meat or veggie loaded pizzas, select any extra toppings and take your “waiting” device back to your table. A few minutes later, a little buzz, flash and a beep from your little hand held device and your pizza is ready for collection. HALLELUJAH.
I was ony half a Birra Moretti down before I picked up my 12inch Romana (pancetta, goats cheese, broccoli) cooked in the restaurants centrepiece mosaic pizza oven. Hello fire cooked, cheesy goodness on the most perfect crisp thin base, goodbye self restraint. I swapped a slice of the good stuff for a taste of Sopie’s Nduja which is perfect if unlike me, you’re a fan of the spice.
Pricey? Not so much, in fact, the prices are pretty reasonable, especially for the quality. We paid less than £10 all in for a pizza each (standard £5.50-£6.50 and £3.95 for a classic margherita) and a beer, which for central London ain’t too shabby.
