Winter Chic

by Charl Pearce

One of the best things about winter fashion?  Cosiness.  Layering.  Textures.

Despite loving prints and bold colour in the warmer months, come the cool weather and months of wind, rain and miserableness, I like to seek comfort in clothing and a warm, neutral colour palette.  Of course, it’s even better if you can look chic whilst embodying all of the above.

This time last year I found a staple pair of flat black knee high boots from Simply Be that I found myself wearing a little too often.  Despite bagging a wide calf fit, my height meant that the boots weren’t quite knee high and there was a distinct lack of over the knee boots available to fit a curvy calf and somewhat amazonian thigh.  Move on a year and this gap in the market for OTK boots has certainly been filled.  These suedette over the knees with a cleated sole from Yours Clothing are everything I was looking for and have become one of my favourite winter buys.  With a heel height of 2 1/2inches a 1 inch platform, there’s enough height to class as dressy (in my books) but are ridiculously comfortable to wear, especially with a pair of thick over the knee socks for extra comfort.

Over the knee boots do need a little extra attention than you’d think, as proven by a simple Google search, and these bad boys do have a tendency to slip down after a while but it’s nothing a bit of extra strength toupee tape around the rim of the boot can’t fix.

You’ll have seen these light weight drape style duster jackets are everywhere on the high street of late.  From Primark to River Island, and In the Style Curve, these jackets are screaming to be layered come the warmer months and the neutral shades make for the perfect throw on to finish any outfit.  I loved pairing the Tay Stone Drape Tie jacket* with this zip detailed skirt from Elvi and a black plisse top from Primark.  I’m not usually one for a waterfall cut piece but the collar detailing gives this jacket a relaxed feel whilst still looking chic.

The Elvi textured skirt has been a go to in my wardrobe during the winter months.  Paired mostly with trusty black opaques, knee boots (or ankle) and a high neck jumper, crew neck long sleeve tee or simple blouse tucked in to its chunky waistband, it’s certainly been well loved and is so comfortable to wear.  Oh and for the record, the zip is in full working order and not just for detailing.  I learned that the hard way.
