Modern Mexican at Wahaca Liverpool 1

by Charl Pearce

Let’s be honest, Mexican food can be a little bit disappointing.

Grim guac that once upon a time saw an avocado, bland burritos and nasty nachos masquerading as an authentic taste of meh-hee-co that leaves you feeling more underwhelmed than arriba.

Take one Masterchef winner in the form of  Thomasina Miers’ and fellow Mexico enthusiast Mark Selby, say tara to tacky Tex Mex style eateries and say hello to Mexican market food inspired in the form of the uber modern and extremely tasty, Wahaca – and I headed along to the Liverpool 1 restaurant to taco-look.

The London restaurant opened following Thomasina’s win on the BBC show that takes inspiration from her time spent falling in love Mexico itself and the authentic burst of flavours, colours and cool interiors quickly turned Wahaca into a small chain with more than 24 restaurants up and down the UK.

Nestled amongst the food and shopping hub of Liverpool 1, Wahaca provides the perfect pit stop for food as well as rooftop cocktail bar to take in the area whilst sipping on a Strawberry & Basil daiquiri in the sun.  Situated on College Lane, Wahaca Liverpool serves up mouth watering tacos, burritos, salads and Mexican market treats in an urban inspired restaurant decorated in zingy blues, yellow and greens that compliment the colourful food being served.

Heralded for authentic Mexican flavours with a modern twist, the menu at Wahaca ranges from chicken tinga tacos and black bean fajitas to loaded nachos, super stuffed steak skirt burritos, street food specials such as deliciously fresh crayfish salads like the to die for crispy fried sweet potato chunks served with caramelised mojo de ajo (that I promise you will not want to share).

The street food portion of the menu is designed to be shared much like Spanish tapas.  Our waiter recommended a few small plates to experience a few different dishes between us followed by a “main plate” should we have room following all the delicious taste sensations.  Turns out we had plenty of room to take on both the small plates and main (surprise!) but were swiftly defeated by the generous flash-grilled skirt steak burrito, a toasted flour tortilla wrapped around black beans, shredded cabbage, green rice, sour cream and salsas.

Not looking for food or want something to take placate the palette following your meal?  (Hey!  I have a very very delicate palette!)  Wahaca also serve up a mean cocktail.  With a range of classic and twisted cocktails including the Wahaca Mule and of course, a wide range of tequila based drinks (when in Rome, eh?) it would be rude not to take advantage of the roof top bar – especially when you’re in the party capital of the North West.
