Girl Put Your Records On

by Charl Pearce

I’ll be completely honest with you.  I know I’m all about the lipstick, blushers and a nice handbag, but if I had to live without them – I could.  I’d look horrible, but I would survive.  If you took away my music however I pretty much think I would shrivel up and DIE.

I was sent these over ear headphones from Phones4U to try out.  I’m usually an in ear kind of gal, but I wanted to channel my inner Bombfunk MC, make like a ghetto cool music kind of person and see what all the fuss was about.  And I’m a convert.  The music quality is insanely better (to the point where I would rather wear these than listen to music through speakers) and in the privacy of my own home, I think they look pretty darn cool.  I’ve yet to brave cracking them out in public yet for fear of someone mistaking me for a cool muso person, little would they know that I’d probably be listening to Taylor Swift of One Direction, but I will do (I have a train journey to Manchester on Saturday that I’m eyeing these up for – must co ordinate an outfit around them first)

While I was talking music I figured I’d complete a tag that I was “tagged” in by Terri Lowe.  I’ve put off posting this due to the horrendousness of my music tastes and the subsequent mocking that will ensue.  However… mock away, as I take on The Music Tag.

1. What are your 5 favourite songs right now?

The City – The 1975
Woman – The 1975
Beyonce – Ego
Ed Sheeran – Kiss Me
Imagine Dragons – Its Time

2. Who are your favourite bands of all time?

There are 3, 2 are pretty “cool” and accepted bands, the other… I’m prepared to be mocked for.

1, REM – I love these partly due to my parents love for them being passed down, REM albums were the soundtrack to my youth and I grew up on them.  There are some songs that are extremely nostalgic to me, and I just love Michael Stipe, his voice and lyric writing ability blows me away.  Nirvana, and Westlife

2, Nirvana – if ever there was a band that I wish I was to have seen live, it would have been these guys.  There is something about them that resonated with me when I first heard their songs.  The first song of theirs that I loved was Lithium which my first boyfriend played to me over MSN one evening (hence my subsequent love of guitar playing men) – since then it kind of snowballed and my love for them and Kurt Cobain as a musician is endless.  Their Unplugged in New York album is easily one of my most played.

3, Westlife – go on, laugh till you pee a little bit so I can continue.  Done?  I love Westlife.  Proper full on love.  I think it was because they came out around the time when I was at my most impressionable and I grew up with them as a band (still laughing?) I don’t care about them “not being credible” or “cool” or any of that.  I LOVE THEM ITS MY THING LET IT GO.

(Please stop laughing)

3. What is the most played song in your iTunes?

4. What was the last album you bought?

The last album I bought was Taylor Swift “Red” – I also have a bit of a crush on Taylor Swift (as you may well know)

6. What was the last single you downloaded?

“Chocolate” by The 1975 – not heard it? GO LISTEN TO IT.  Actually obsessed with this song and it was well worth the price of a Cheeseburger

7. What is your favourite band right now?

The 1975 – I SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD.  Absolutely loving their music, their style, their videos – everything is polished and perfection .  They have a great sound to them that I don’t feel like anyone else is doing at the moment, and their lead singer Matt Healy has this something about him that captivates me.

8. What is your favourite type of music?

I’m an equal opportunities listener, I’ll listen to almost anything.  I do like a good old pop/R’n’B song that I can sing along to and dance around the house to.

9. In your 25 Most Played list, what is #10?

“Night Drive” by Jimmy Eat World

10. What was the first gig you ever went to?

First ever gig was one of the early Take That shows.  I was probably around 7 years old and I was madly in love with Mark Owen.  Don’t hate.

11. What was the best gig you’ve ever been to?

There are 2.  One is one of the 2 REM gigs that I went to which was at the Manchester Cricket ground – a Festival called “Move” (if I remember rightly) – they were the headline act and I spent from 2pm till 9pm in the crowd to get a good spot.  There was some serious elbowing and ducking and diving between peoples legs – but my view of Michael Stipe was second to none and I was blown away.  Amazing live.

The second was the FINAL EVER Westlife gig at Croke Park in Dublin last year.  Amazing atmosphere (and tears!), lots of screaming girls, lots of Guiness and an amazing show (those boys can put on a good show!)

12. And finally, if there was one band/album/song you would recommend everyone listening to RIGHT NOW, what would it be?

The 1975.  I harp on about them on Twitter and on my blog that I should be on commission, but I’m unbelievably sold on these boys and predict massive things for them.  Check out their latest song “The City”, “Chocolate” or “Sex” (their song “Woman” also gives me goosebumps in the same way that “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley does – big claims!)

And I am in love with Chocolate as well. Good tastes, lady :)
