Writing Ginger Girl Says for the last 3 (almost 4) years have taught me so much. From writing, photography and utilising social media to how to be body confident, achieving the perfect smokey eye and how to change up my skincare according to my age. To go along with their Smart Guides to energy, E.ON got in touch with me to ask if I’d like to write a ‘smart guide’ to style to help promote their SMART Meters. SMART Meters show you how much it costs to straighten your hair, run a bath or partake in a 5 hour Gilmore Girls marathon in real time. It also allows you to keep a hold on the purse strings so that you’re not spending money or using energy that you don’t need to be (such as leaving lights on – my mums biggest bug bear!). So lets get it underway.
I’d love to be the person recommending to you a capsule wardrobe. “Hey guys, be thrify and live simply! You can mix and match just 10 items of clothing for every day of summers!” Alas, my wardrobe is anything but capsule. Infact, my wardrobe is actually two wardrobes plus one entire set of drawers and an under bed drawer too. WHOOPS! Despite my crazy amass of clothes one thing I have learnt is that it’s important to spend your money wisely. Invest in your key pieces: a white fitted shirt, a buttery soft leather jacket, jeans, sturdy shoes, a winter coat. The kind of items you wear time and time again. When it comes to fast fashion, you know, the pieces you wear once on a night out and simply cannot be see in again, you can afford to spend less (and buy more!).
Take inspiration from other bloggers. Whether its fashion OR beauty I find that most of my inspiration comes from other beauty or fashion bloggers. Where in the past people would get outfit ideas from looking at celebrities, I head straight to my Bloglovin or Instagram feed and just look at what my favourite bloggers are adorning their babein’ bodies with. I’ll also be more specific look at how to style up certain items, for example, whack “denim shirt plus size outfit blogger” into Google and voila! One denim shirt now = 20 amazing outfits.
…But Be You
…..but don’t over think your outfits and try to copy someone elses look piece by piece. Give it your own spin. So many times you can ruin an outfit (or an occasion) by trying to wear something that you just can’t carry off. And I don’t mean by wearing an item that you “shouldn’t” wear. What I mean is that layering fabrics, patterns and colours or mixing and matching metals or fashion styles can look amazing on others, but if you don’t feel comfortable wearing it, then don’t. Take that inspiration and adapt it to suit your own style.
Take Some Tips
Around 3-4 years ago, make up wise I was a mess. I had no eyebrows, I had one make up brush which I used for absolutely everything and a clear Rimmel Vinyl Lip Gloss (remember that one?). Since then my makeup skills and collection have come on lips and brows (like leaps and bounds, see what I did there?) and its all thanks to watching YouTube tutorials, learning how to use certain makeup tools to achieve the look you want to create. If you look on YouTube you can find “how to” videos for a full face of makeup OR individual steps like base application, how to line your eyes, how to apply blusher etc.
Splurge and Save
Much like fashion I’d say there are items you can definitely afford to splurge on and some you can save on. I always think it’s important to invest in skincare, after all, it doesn’t matter what fancy makeup products you’re putting on your face if your skin isn’t in tip top condition. Spend a few extra pound on decent serums and moisturisers as well as products to remove your make-up to ensure your skin is squeaky clean before applying your skincare. This way you can afford to spend more on the super affordable products available at the drug store such as Freedom, Rimmel. I try not to buy high end products because I’m a self confessed make up junkie and cannot justify spending £££ on say, one lipstick when I can get four which I’ll wear the same amount of time.
Don’t Throw Shade (s Away)
Ever buy a foundation to find out its the completely the wrong colour and your more tangoed than ready to tango? I have and my drawer of foundations which have been worn once and discarded cant confirm that sentence. Websites like Findation.com mean that you can find the perfect shade of foundation for you in other brands based on the shade you currently use. Use Revlon Colorstay in the shade Ivory, these websites will tell you which shade you should be picking up from MAC, NARS or Illamasqua.
