Last week I was invited to attend the Blogger Takeover event that was being held by plus size fashion powerhouse Simply Be. The Blogger Takeover is exactly that, 3 bloggers who were invited by the team at Simply Be to take part in every girls dream come true – to design their ideal dream dress.
Laura, Lauren and Em each had the opportunity to talk through and design a dress each with the help of Simply Be’s in house designers and buyers (who are all very lovely and very glam) which would not only be made especially for them to wear, but also to be sold directly to the public via the Simply Be website. With the number fashion blogs that have sprung up on the internet, with countless OOTD’s, top high street picks, vintage finds etc it appears the fashion industry are sitting up and listening to what we have to say. We were told at the event yesterday that even the big trend predictors of the fashion world are picking up whats hot for the coming seasons based on what they’ve seen coming off blogs and street style sites such as What I Wore Today.
As fashion bloggers have begun to bridge a gap for retailers between the hanger and your wardrobe. When buying products online (which is more often than not the case when shopping for plus size) its hard to get a gauge of what a dress or a skirt will look like or fit like “off the hanger” so to speak. If I was looking for a review of the Simply Be Split Dress for example, I’d get my Google on, find Becky looking every fabulous inch of perfection and add it to my basket. Seeing how an item looks on a *clears throat* real woman can also give an example of how you could style an item if you’re a bit stuck for ideas.
With this in mind it would seem like a match made it perfect harmony for some of these *clears throat again* “real women” who know plus size fashion and what us ladies like and don’t like to design dresses especially for us.
Each of the girls brought gorgeous designs to the table, and even though they’re as unique as each of the bloggers who designed them…I’d wear them all as they cater to all aspects of my split style personality.
Lauren’s neon pink and yellow ice cream print skater dress is the perfect bit of neon. Teamed with bright sandals, some big sunnies and a generous helping of bright lippie (what else?) this is ideal for a cute and quirky couple of ciders in the beer garden. That sweetheart neckline is ideal for adding a little bit of optical trickery to “the girls” aswell.
Em’s form fitting peacock print dress oozes sophistication and class, while still managing to look sexy. To me, how the dress is shaped screams out “I have boobs and a butt and damn they look good” – a little a la Kardashian. Somtimes it’s easy to think “I’m a little bigger than others, I’m going to wear a dress to conceal this”. This used to be me, but Em’s dress appeals more to me in that I’ve become more accepting of my body shape and I want to show off the fact that I have boobs, I have a (relatively) flat tummy (WHEN STANDING UP) and I have a booty that won’t quit. CURVE HUGGING but flattering, with a lot of focus on the dresses length (for us 5 footfabulous types) and sleeves for those who want to conceal their bingo wings – and the peacock print is beautiful, everyone loves peacock print right?
Laura’s dress is every inch the glamazonian that she is. With her perfectly coiffed hair, luciocus lashes, glowing skin and stilettos heels that I couldn’t even walk in, Laura’s dress screams everything “Laura”. Glam, sexy and girly. With a chiffon skirts that skims the problem tummy area and a top that flatters and accentuates “the girls” – this dress in its block coral and black colours is perfect for a night out on the tiles sipping cocktails and dancing up a storm.
We also got the chance to have a sneak peak of the up and coming A/W13 collection that will be available on the Simply Be website and in store in the coming months (I actually chose to go and look at the clothes before I headed for the food – first time for everything). Although we’re only just in the middle of summer, looking at the rails and rails of Autumn/Winter clothes left me salivating at the mouth for the day when I could don some knitted tights, biker boots and a fluffy oversized cardigan.
I fell in love with two pieces (modelled by my beautiful model – Miss Rosie) a pair of velvet look black shorts that I declared my love for by insisting “I want to have sex with these shorts!” and a vintage/lace look long sleeved cream tunic dress which would be as perfect in the summer teamed with gladiator sandles and a flowered headband and some aviators as it would in the winter with aforementioned chunky knits and flats – these are top of my top list.
Which of the Blogger Takeover dresses is your favourite? I could see myself wearing all of them so I can’t decide….& you can never have too many dresses after all…
