Scents are a big part of winter for me. Citrus sweet candles that smell of cocktails being switched out in favour of rich, spicy scents that wrap your home in a warm comforting aroma and the perfumes that you reach for at the same time as dusting off your winter boots and rooting for your berry lipsticks. We all have our individual favourites and with scent being such a powerful sense, it can be extremely nostalgic and reminiscent of the time of year. Whether its heady floral, spicy or musky fragrances L’Occitane, Tom Ford and Jo Malone always seem to get it right when it comes to winter fragrances.
I’ve picked four (okay, technically 5) of my favourite Autumn/Winter fragrances to share with you.
Tom Ford – Noir & Black Orchid
Black Orchid is the perfume that lingers on scarves well after you’e worn it and the dark, tempting florals and rich fruit, Lotus Wood, Noir Gourmand Accord Patchouli,Vetiver and Vanilla combined with Balsam and smooth Sandalwood is what gives Black Orchid its signature luxurious scent. Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme is an oriental, floral and sensual fragrance designed to capture the fascinating paradox of a woman with notes of Mandarin Oil, Bitter Orange Oil, Ginger Extract, Rose Absolute, Jasmine Accord, Orange Flower, Indian Kulfi Accord, Vanilla Madagascar, Amber, Australian Sandal Wood, Lentisque Resinoid. Much like Black Orchid, it’s a scent which may be a little overpowering for the uninitiated but there is no denying that they are fragrances which are bold, feminine and sexy.
Library of Fragrance – Gingerbread
I love the Library of Fragrance perfumes due to the majority being evolved from the most loved smells of everyday items. Thunderstorm, Baby Powder and even a good old G&T have been transformed into linear scents from this New York based company and have quickly become great sellers since launching in Boots. Their Gingerbread perfume does exactly what is says on tin. Gingerbread is a rich, spicy ginger scent, extremely warm and sexy and smells exactly like freshly baked gingerbread biscuits. There’s nothing that smells more homely or dare I say, festive, than smelling like something sweet and delicious that you just want to eat.
Florence Anne – Blackcurrant & Fig
I picked up Blackcurrant & Fig from the Florence Anne collection at Boots after searching for an alternative to Blackberry & Bay from Jo Malone. Albeit it doesn’t smell anywhere near as luxury or last as long on the skin, but its rich and sophisticated with vibrant juicy blackcurrant, fresh coriander and davana oil evoking luscious green Mediterranean fig. I love this as a fresher and fruitier alternative to the heavier scents in this post and is ideal for everyday wear.
Jo Malone – Pomegranate Noir
Pomegranate Noir is a perfume that needs no introduction. It has a cult following from lovers of the Jo Malone fragrances. The embodiment of a winter fragrance this scent is a dark and enigmatic fragrance which has a combination of Ruby-rich juices of Pomegranate, Raspberry and Plum spiked with pink pepper laced with Casablanca Lily and Spicy Woods. The Jo Malone website describes it as the perfect accompaniment to the warm sensuality of a daring red dress and I’d agree, although its such an individual cologne that receives so many compliments that I can’t bear to save it for special occasions. Whether teamed with a red dress, cosy jumper or denim shirt dress, notes of Raspberry, Pomegranate, Plum, Rhuburb and Watermelon, Lily-of-the-valley, Jasmine, Rose, Pink Pepper, Clove, Olibanum, Guaiac wood and Virginia cedar, Patchouli, Musk and Amber means that this 30ml travel size bottle is always in my handbag.
