MUSIC || My Christmas Playlist

by Charl Pearce

The start of Christmas is signified by 3 different occasions:

1. seeing the Coca Cola advert for the first time
2. the moment you put up your Christmas tree (last year I put mine up on Christmas Eve – BAH humbug)
3. the introduction of a Christmas songs playlist into your life

I love Christmas music, its very much the one thing that gets me in the mood for the festive season and mine is most definitely guilty pleasure heavy… Whereas on the side of the spectrum, the CD thincluding at my mum plays every year since I was a teenager is “Bing Crosby & Friends”.  It’s full of all the oldies (but goodies) – including “Is That You Santa Claus?” and “White Christmas”.  With the crackle on the CD it almost feels as though it should be played through a record player with a side of Port or Sherry.

Anyway, back to my playlist.

Picture the scene: I’m decorating the christmas tree with baubles hanging from my ear lobes and tinsel wrapped round my neck, a glass of mulled wine or Baileys on the go (they’re interchangeable) and no doubt a christmas hat with pine needles from last years tree poking in my head. I have my christmas playlist on loud, I’m possibly wearing pyjamas and I’m singing along not caring how out of key I sound because it always rains in December and no amount of my god awful singing will change that.

I’ll mostly be found spinning around the living room with Ted in his newly acquired Santa outfit to the following:

Wham – Last Christmas
Destinys Child – 8 Days of Christmas
Britney Spears – My Only Wish
Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas
Bon Jovi – Please Come Home for Christmas
Pogues – Fairytale of New York
Chris Rea – Driving Home for Christmas
Elvis – Blue Christmas
Justin Bieber – Mistletoe
Frank Sinatra – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Santa Baby – Eartha Kitt

Which songs get you in the Christmas mood?  I need to expand my playlist to last an entire day (although I’d be happy listening to the Britney song on repeat).

* Not a hint of Buble anywhere in that list – I know it’s probably frowned upon but I never really *got* the Buble Christmas album.  My apologies.
