Carnaby Street Review

by Charl Pearce

October is a busy theatre month for the lovely people over at The Regent Theatre in Stoke (and a busy one for me!).  With 4 week long shows running consequtively, October is going to be filled with theatre trips galore for me and thus a whole host of show reviews will be making their way to quench your theatre cravings, dear.

Last night I took the old dear along to see the opening night of Carnaby Street.  The musical which was written by Carl Leighton Pope, is the story of a small town Scouse boys musical rise to the top.

Straight off the back of the success of british music acts such as  The Beatles, dreams of fame and fortune are on Jude’s mind and with his BFF Penny in towe he hitchhikes from “The Pool” down to groovy 60’s London.  The pair head to London’s Carnaby Street where they happen upon Jack Spratt, a jack the lad cockney who just so happens to be a music manager. His latest project are on the up, but they’re missing a vital ingredient and Jude seems to be just the ticket.  After finding (and losing) love with the “It Girl” of Carnaby Street, Jane, Jude learns the hard way that theres more to life than bright lights and screaming girls.

With the show punctuated by some of the biggest hits of the 60s including Beethoven, Keep on Running, You Really Got Me & a whole whost more, a wardrobe that showcases the miniest of mini skirts and narrated by Jack Spratt (played by former Eastenders and Loserville star Aaron Sidwell)  Carnaby Street really packs a fun filled 60’s punch.

Carnaby Street will running at the Regent Theatre until Saturday 12th October.  Tickets are available online or by calling the box office on 0844 871 7649.
