Jeans & A Nice Top

by Charl Pearce

If there’s one item of clothing that I could be accused of having “one too many of” it’s a button down shirt, although that’s not the worst thing to be accused of.  Cotton, patterned, striped, over sized, fitted… when shopping, a button down shirt has the same effect on me that anything sparkly has for a magpie.  I see it and I have to have it.  No matter how many I already have hanging in my wardrobe, I’ll always find room for one more.

Worn with cigarette pants, skinny jeans or my latest denim discovery, the boyfriend jean, they’re a lightweight and layering friendly style staple that work for any season and occasion and I personally can’t get enough of them.

My latest addition is this vibrant number from the latest collection at navabi, who FYI always deliver the most beautiful statement shirts, is an oversized cut shirt in a geometric print in complimenting shades of green and pink.  One thing I love about this shirt, aside from the POW colour palette and mandarin style collar which gives it quite a relaxed look is the split side seams which, if you’ve got hips that don’t lie like mine and Shakira’s, are a god send.

Being an hourglass shape, I often find that tops fit me on the top half on my body but once they get get to my hips, they’re not budging.  These side split seams or a split back shirt (of which I’m also a fan) give a little bit more room to manoeuvre to avoid me having to size up and buying a blouse that will swamp my upper half..

I never thought I’d be a fan of boyfriend fit or slouch fit jeans in or come to think of it, light wash jeans in general.  I’m a long standing fan of skinny jeans (more specifically the George Wonderfit or Wondersculpt) and I love practically pouring my lower body into an indigo denim or black pair as they’re  the perfect combination to wear with, well, just about everything.  I’ve taken serious style inspiration from Naomi at Diamonds and Pearls and her ability to dress up or down a pair of ripped jeans.

The closest I’ve ever come to distressed looking jeans are a ripped knee and I’m sure there is a pair of Stone Island stonewash jeans lurking somewhere in my past.

I picked up a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans from Evans Clothing when they recently had a flash sale for £25 . I’ll admit that when I first tried on these new, loose fitting and relaxed style of jeans, I longed for the support of my skinny jeans. I didn’t feel as put together as I usually would and after years of living in jeans, it was somewhat of a transition letting it “all hang out”.  The feeling was fleeting and after a day of feeling like I was wearing my pyjamas to work, I was sold.

If I really really (and I mean, really) dress these jeans down, I do border on looking  like a Jeremy Kyle contestant but “jeans and a nice top” (the uniform of 90s “nightout wear”) can be easily executed with either a pair of low heeled courts as styled here, your favourite flats or a killer heel for a versatile look.
