Haircare Heroes | February

by Charl Pearce

What do the wind, rain and snow of the winter months have in common? They all wreak havoc with my already unruly hair. Come December onwards, as well as my skin becoming as indecisive as a teenage boy and varying between an oil slick and the sahara desert, my hair takes the toll of the fluctuating temperatures and begins to resemble candyfloss. And I don’t mean in a sweet and cotton candy pink kind of way.

Zapped of moisture and feeling utterly sorry for itself, I tend to try and pack in some extra TLC 3 times a week and alternate a budget and (kind of) blow out hair mask following a good shampooing with the Osmo Deep Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner. The Herbal Essences Hello Hydration is an old favourite of mine because it costs between £2-£4 (its always on offer in supermarkets), it smells amazing and it leaves my hair feeling silky smooth without blowing the bank.

The Macademia Nourishing Moisture Masque is a thicker consistancy than the Herbal Essences and is almost buttery to the touch and a little goes a long way when applied to just shampooed hair. I usually leave this on for a good 30 minutes+ when I have that little bit of extra time to lay in a bubble bath (Lush The Comforter Bubble Bar, if you were wondering) and reading a book/scroll through social media. It does an amazing jo bat quenching my hairs thirst and my it doesn’t feel quite so much like a birds nest when I come to brush it through after towel drying. I’ve become addicted to my Wet Brush (so much so that my good old Tangle Teezer has been pushed to the back of the drawer). It glides so easily through my wet hair and tough tangles without snagging in a few strokes. It does get a helping hand from the Macademia Healing Oil which in my opinion knocks socks off Morrocan Oil. I’ve had sample sizes of this in the past and I could really notice the difference in my blow drys when I ran out, so much so that I finally took the plunge and purchased a full size because I couldn’t cope without it in my hair routine. It has a light scent to it which lasts throughout the day but most importantly in controls frizz, adds shine and makes the lengths of my hair feel so smooth.

As much as I’m pumping my hair full of moisturising products when it’s being washed, I try not to over wash my hair in the winter in order to not strip the natural moisturising oils of the scalp. To ensure I don’t wind up looking like a greasy Glenda, I’ve been relying on Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Genius Extender to add an extra day or two of longevity to a wash or blow dry (because there’s much more interesting things to life than styling your hair, Netflix marathons for one). This is essentially a glorified dry shampoo which you can also use with a hair dryer and barrel brush (or a Babyliss Big Hair in my case) to give your past its sell by hair hair a bit more of a bounce and style than bedhead. When I do want bedhead I reach for the the vo5 Give Me Texture for backcomb in a bottle lift when sprayed at the routes and on the ends of the hair for a little bit of extra volume and texture, because as much as freshly washed and conditioned hair feels like heaven, it can make styling a bloody nightmare.
