LIFE || Google Chromecast, The New Love of My Life

by Charl Pearce

Dear The Internet

After a lot of searching, a lot of disappointment, nights alone in a bed made for two with a heavy weight on my heart I think I’ve finally found the one. It’s been a whirlwind relationship, I know. It sounds almost silly that I can sit here and gush to you about finding true love in such a short amount of time. It all came out of nowhere and its surprised me as much as it will surprise you, my faithful readers. I’m happier than I’ve been in a long while, with a constant smile on my face and live with the warm feeling that when I finish work I’m not going home to an empty house.

Google Chromecast

My Google Chromecast.

A USB stick sized device which can bring so much happiness and joy to a house seems almost unbelieveable, but rest assured internet friends, it’s real.

“Chromecast”? – let me give you the skinny.

Google Chromecast

A Chromecast is a Google product which is essentially a media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port of your television which allows you to use your phone/tablet as a 21st Century remote control. I kid you not.

Google Chromecast

All you need to do is install the Chromecast app to your handheld device (and ensure you’re connected to WIFI) and the Chromecast will enable you to watch the likes of Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer and BTSport through their app on your TV.  You can use Google Chrome extensions on your laptop to “project” your computer screen to your TV and there are even picture streaming apps and arcade games available via the App Store (or Google Play if you’re on Android).

“You can do this already with Virgin Media!” is what I’ve been met with when I’ve explained what it is that a Chromecast does, almost as though I’m a technological idiot. My reply? I don’t really watch normal television. I’ll flick it on post work to catch a few episodes of Come Dine With Me followed by The Simpsons but other than that my black box doesn’t get too much of a work out, which is why I have never found the dollar justification of a TV based service such as Sky, Virgin Media or the like.

But Netflix, through my TV?

Whether I want to watch a TV series, old films that I’ve seen time and time again (but still love) or new films based on those much loved films, it’s to Netflix I turn. I feel as though he knows me and has my best interests at heart, but I’ve always been cramped in bed with a laptop perched on my knee or craning my neck to watch an iddy biddy tablet and I was beginning to grow jealous of those who could stream Netflix directly through their TV.

But now I’ve found the beautiful answer, and at only £30 this wonderful device has changed my life in only 3 days. £10 a day for pure unadulterated happiness is a small price to pay. I’ve never been an advocate for non monagamous relationships, but Netflix plus my Chromecast makes for the perfect three way.

Streaming quality isn’t affected in the slightest, there’s none of that pesky buffering and it’s as easy to set up as ABC, 123.

I’m currently trying to work out how to stream US Netflix through my Chromecast seeing as though UK Netflix doesn’t have Dawsons Creek and I only have a season and a half left of of those Creek kids to watch until the season finale.

Help a gal out if you have the know how?
