Cocktail Making with Friction Free Shaving

by Charl Pearce

Take one Saturday afternoon in Bar Opus in Birmingham, 35 bloggers and a shaving company and you have a recipe for a thoroughly enjoyable and informative blogger event. Plus, cocktails always = good.

The event was to celebrate the success of subscription box service, Friction Free Shaving who offer a razor delivery service of one of three price brackets which promise a letterbox safe parcel each month to keep your legs super smooth and free from fuzz. Working from reports that as women we’re guilty of either spending big bucks each month on fussy and expensive shaving products OR we’re scrimping in that area and ending up with ingrown hairs or skin irritation and rashes. I don’t know about you, but I have more important things to spend my money on than razor blades and a red and bumpy bikini line just isn’t going to cut it in the bedroom (especially if you’re a fan of it “all off”).

When you sign up to the service you can choose between the Faye, Frankie or Samantha razor – each is a different cost per month (£3, £5 or £7) and the heads have a certain number of blade strips dependent on your razor preference.  On the cheaper end of the scale you have the Faye with 2 blades and on the pricier end, Samantha has a 5 blade head.  Each of the shavers have their own colours; the sleek white design of the Faye, the vivacious pink of Frankie or the rose gold  detailing of the Samantha.  Each razor head boasts different features including lubricating strips, pivot heads and guard trimmers.  You never knew shaving could be so complex (or pretty!) did you?

The overall idea is that once you’re subscribed, Friction Free Shaving take the trouble out of actually remembering to buy razors (lets face it, how many times have you tried to battle a weeks worth of leg growth with a blunt blade because you were carried away buying lipsticks in Boots rather than picking up blades?) and encourage you to change the blade more often. Blunt blades cause irratation when shaving (including razor burn/rash) because they require more pressure than a sharp blade and can also cause a build up of bacteria on the blades. Not sexy.

At the event we were taught by the staff at Bar Opus how to create 3 different cocktails inspired by their respective razor name. The Samantha was a fizzy and refreshing Limoncello based cocktail, the Faye a smooth whiskey based number and the Frankie a beautifully layered tipple containing rose syrup, prosecco and blackberry vodka.

One of the best things about being a blogger is being one of the first to hear about new brands and concepts which you may not be privvy too if you didn’t have your ear to the ground. We’re in the perfect position to see the evolution of new brands, show our support and shine a spotlight on their business baby. Granted, this can open you up to concepts you just know won’t take flight but sometimes, like with Friction Free Shaving, you can uncover a little gem which can genuinely see yourself utilising.

Friction Free Shaving have grown legs (albeit, silky smooth legs) in the blogging community before I had even heard of the brand when I was invited to attend their cocktail making class a couple of weekends ago. Launched using Seedrs, where the average Joe invest in your idea (much like Crowdfunding or Kickstarter) the brand kicked the butt of their £50k target and have been growing since their launch in 2015.

The event was a chance to get to meet the brains behind the boxes as well as celebrate the success of the brand so far. I took home my very first Friction Free Shaving Box including a personalised Samantha razor and treated my legs (and the rest) to a smooth shave – perfect to jump into a freshly made bed with!

I’ve already signed to receive my next box – I opted for the Samantha because of how sleek she looks, the comfort of the shave with the swivel head and how close to the skin the hair is shaved.

Is Friction Free Shaving a subscription box you could see yourself using?
