Isn’t it crazy how scents and perfumes in particular can bring back memories? Whenever I smell Lancome “Tresor” it reminds me of being younger and sitting on my mums bed whilst she put on her make up, fixed her hair, picked her jewellery and put on her heels when she was getting ready to go out. To this day when I pass the Lancome counter I smell that perfume and I’m transported back to then.
The smell of Jean Paul Gaultiers Classique perfume reminds me of a fizzy pop fuelled night out, kissing a boy I really liked, dancing, stumbling home and waking up in my makeup at the tender age of 18. Even smelling it on other people I develop strobe light filled hazy flashbacks.
Dolce and Gabbana “Light Blue” perfume reminds me of summer holidays at college. Of road trips to the seaside, playing music loudly, BBQ’s, laughing with friends, dates with boys (I was a late bloomer) and all that good stuff that your teenage years bring. This is very much a perfume that when I wear it I instantly feel 10 years younger, but unfortunately the fine lines around my eyes tell a different story. It’s my “happy” perfume” & it just goes to prove how sensory scent can be.
Want to look at the science behind it?
The olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling it’s sometimes called the “emotional brain,” smell can call up memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously. The olfactory bulb has intimate access to the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the hippocampus, which is responsible for associative learning. Despite the tight wiring, however, smells would not trigger memories if it weren’t for conditioned responses. When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment. Your brain forges a link between the smell and a memory. Therefore, when you encounter the smell again, the link is already there, ready to elicit a memory or a mood.
