BEAUTY || The Scent of Memories & Days Gone By (GIVEAWAY!)

Isn’t it crazy how scents and perfumes in particular can bring back memories? Whenever I smell Lancome “Tresor” it reminds me of being younger and sitting on my mums bed whilst she put on her make up, fixed her hair, picked her jewellery and put on her heels when she was getting ready to go out. To this day when I pass the Lancome counter I smell that perfume and I’m transported back to then.

The smell of Jean Paul Gaultiers Classique perfume reminds me of a fizzy pop fuelled night out, kissing a boy I really liked, dancing, stumbling home and waking up in my makeup at the tender age of 18. Even smelling it on other people I develop strobe light filled hazy flashbacks.

Dolce and Gabbana “Light Blue” perfume reminds me of summer holidays at college. Of road trips to the seaside, playing music loudly, BBQ’s, laughing with friends, dates with boys (I was a late bloomer) and all that good stuff that your teenage years bring. This is very much a perfume that when I wear it I instantly feel 10 years younger,  but unfortunately the fine lines around my eyes tell a different story.  It’s my “happy” perfume” & it just goes to prove how sensory scent can be.

Want to look at the science behind it?

The olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling it’s sometimes called the “emotional brain,” smell can call up memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously.  The olfactory bulb has intimate access to the amygdala, which processes emotion, and the hippocampus, which is responsible for associative learning. Despite the tight wiring, however, smells would not trigger memories if it weren’t for conditioned responses. When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment. Your brain forges a link between the smell and a memory.  Therefore,  when you encounter the smell again, the link is already there, ready to elicit a memory or a mood.

I wanted to share my happy perfume with one of you and therefore will be running a giveaway to win a bottle of Dolce & Gabbana “Light Blue”. I’m going to be using ye olde Rafflecopter to pick a winner.

The giveaway will run for a week from 18th – 25th October and a winner will be picked at random on Friday 25th October.

You can enter below using several ways. Good luck!

(As a little extra thing, if you have any perfume fuelled memories – I find these things really sweet!)

  • Lovely post – I’ve never actually smelled any of the perfumes you mention sadly! Estee Lauder Sensuous reminds me of cosy winters by the log fire at home with my family, of beginning to feel ‘grown up’ (I started wearing it when I was about 17) and of going to New York. Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia reminds me of the very early days of my relationship and Thierry Mugler Angel reminds me of the mushy stage about 3-4 months in and I LOVE it. On the flip side, Marc Jacobs Lola reminds me of how nervous/anxious/friendless I was starting out at Uni and I can’t stand the stuff, it makes me want to hurl haha. xx

  • I love Dolce & Gabbana light blue! I used to wear it (along with loads of other girls) for school! It’s the scent of my school days ha. Lovely giveaway :) xxx

  • I have to admit that I have not smelled any of the scents that you mentioned. :( I honestly cannot think of any particular scent that reminds me of anything…beyond food, which is kind of weird. :)

I don’t have any perfume memories of anything I’d wear but I do have memories if i smell Joop or Boss as ex-boys wore them. Actualy, this may sound weird, but Dove deodorant (the orangey one) reminds me of school ski trips haha. Not the same or beautiful sounding though!
    Love Em xx

  • Did I have to say “boo-yah” in the tweet? Really? I best win now.

  • My favourite perfume is Coco Mademoiselle, I bought it when I got my first job and started living away from home so it reminds me of freedom and being independent :) It cost me pretty much all my spare cash that month and I loved it sooo much (still do, never grow up ha!)
