Where is the Romance?

romance

In Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw talks about “the ick factor” – and the notion that when faced with romance, modern women can’t handle it, that we have become so accustomed to the modern man that “romance” is now a thing of the past. Gone are pages and pages long love letters and in their place we have sexting, pokes on Facebook, “liking” of our photos – we’re so romance starved that should we find a guy who attempts any type of romantic gesture – we don’t know what to do with it and so run for the hills.

Its a universally accepted fact that as humans we’re instantly scared or skeptical of what we don’t know – and romance is a prime example of this. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo turns up at Juliets balcony making declarations of his love and this works so well for ole Romeo that Juliet ends up killing herself for him. In Romeo and Juliet, this = romantic. Fast forward to 2013, this = stalker.

I’ll be honest, I love a bit of romance. Infact, I don’t think there is enough romance in the world. If I could live my life like I was in The Notebook, Serendipity or One Day, I would.

365 letters of love declaration over a year?
Writing your number in a book in the hopes that eventually fate will ensure “your one true” will find that book?
Spending years of your life being best friends with someone, for him to follow you to Paris years later and he declares his undying love for?

I’m a sucker for all of the above.

These are the things that my dreams are made of… but dreams are dreams and in reality romance is a very much watered down version of what we see in films, and men like Noah and Romeo don’t really exist…

… but then there’s this “Tom from Mcfly” wedding speech video.

If you haven’t seen this you must have been living under a rock – this video has gone viral. To me, this video right here is romance at its most perfect. I watched, I smirked, tears prickled my sensitive little girl eyeballs and I felt the heartstrings well and truly being pulled. Lets get it out there – I want a Tom Fletcher all of my own. Is there a shop where you can buy wedding speech singing men? If so, I want to be at the front of the queue.

Even full grown men have given Tom props for this. The men I work with are “mens men” – burp, fart, scratch, tits, fannies, lewd jokes – not a trace of romance. Yet here they were watching the video partly in admiration, partly through jealously (part man crush I think). It amazed me how accepting of this hugely public declaration of love these manly men were and it left me thinking (and hoping) that perhaps we’re all to blame for the absence of romance because its evident that most of us do appreciate it, we’re just not sure how acceptable it is in this day and age.

So, as a fan of the R word, a lover of all films soppy, geeky and adorable – can we all (I’m looking at all the hot, rich, adorable and single men who may have ended up on this page who have a penchant for gingers with a lipstick addition)

Use this video as a romantic kick up this ass,and EMBRACE THE ROMANCE.
